Good News

In the eternal quest for a decent GRE score, I have finished. Yep, 680 verbal, 780 quantitative and hopeful for the essay (One was a repeat from my first test). So, no more excuses for not pursueing the grad school applications. And four more job applications by Friday. So why am I sitting in my living room surfing the internet?

After my GRE last night, I went food shopping. Checkers is my new favorite grocery store. Happy memories of childhood combined with the best random selection in town. Only the Med Market has gyro meat, and no where else has such a variety of melty Mexican cheeses. And dried potato leek soup for $0.37 on sale. Sadly, it was incredibly foggy out, so I could not see the eclipse. I love lunar eclipses, partially because unlike a solar one, you can actually watch it.

I am curious about the man who lived here before me. I met him briefly in May, when I looked at the place. He claimed to have known me as a freshman, and I sort of remember him. He was part of the LARP crowd that hung out with until I met real gamers. A few weeks after I first moved in, I had two beefy men knock on the door at 10, looking for him. I figured they were repo men. This morning, a really skanky guy knocked on the door looking for him. Who is this man? And what was he into (besides gaming?).

The current list for grad school is:
University of Wisconsin (Madison) for Library Science and Geology
University of Arizona for Library Science (and some Planetary Science classes as they work in the sched)
University of Iowa for Library Science (another Midwestern, close to home place)
University of Kansas for geology (in case I decide to stick around Lawrence because of a boy)
Dalhousie University for geology (in case the US starts to get way scary)

I am trying to find reasons to like Kerry, and not vote for him just because he is not Bush (a valid reason). I actually like his wife for her sometimes over the top bluntness, but I think I like Kerry's cousin even more. http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2004/10/28/kerry_cousin/index.html

Googling

One should never google oneself. It is way to silly. When I good for my real name, all that appears is sites about boats. Then there is a picture of me pointing at ice in a permafrost tunnel.

Today I searched for affreca. I am lucky to have a unique internet handle that I have stuck with for just about every log in I have ever had. Except for the ones where I have forgotten my password, or they don't want it to be the same as your email (on okcupid.com I am KRose). The first site that pops up is this one. Nifty, eh? Then there is a lot about the woman I stole the name from, a famous Manx noblewoman, and her granddaughter. And then there is an article on Svathy's website that I supposedly wrote about medieval costumes. I don't remember it at all. It sort of looks like my style. Intermixed with more about the real Affreca are links to this article. On theater costuming link lists. It makes me appreciate the power of random sources. My paper, written in high school, with minor research, is used as an explanation for all sorts of costuming questions. Not my research on Venus, but the early research on bliauts shall be my legacy.
