Why Universities are Disease Factories

I got back from my trip Saturday, and planned to grade and get started on school stuff. Did not happen, as I'm feeling ill. Normal cold issues, plus a sore jaw. Normally I would just ignore it, but I'm stressed, and Tom mentioned mumps. So I go the KU health services. I don't know if I fit the symptoms, but I'm supposed to stay home if I have it. So I try to get an appointment at Watkins. No luck Sunday, as they're closed. Call this morning, and get told that they can't schedule an appointment because the system is down. I mention the suspesion.. and get my information taken and told that I'll get a call back. I ask when.. a few hours. Hmmm.. Do I go to class? Apparently. Because I've already missed a week. If I am infectious, I get to spread it around. So what happens if a real epidemic occurs?

EDIT: I may have mumps, but the best test they can do is to feel my neck. I might have mumps, so I am quarentined until Sunday. This makes schoolwork difficult.

oh yeah, and isn't there a better test than that? one would think that they would be able to have some type of blood test or something in order to confirm that it is or isn't mumps.

Maybe not having a really good test for mumps is why it can spread like it has - people just assume they have a cold or a bug of some sort. Affreca - weren't you immunized with an MMR?

Yes, I've had two MMR shots, as have most of the people who've gotten sick. (http://www.slate.com/id/2140302/) I'm guessing I didn't have full immunization, but the shots made it less bad. Feeling pretty good now, trying to cope with little outside contact.

Hmmm...That's interesting. I bet it'll come up to MN too. I wonder if the NG will immunize us if it does?
