Effects of Caffiene and Me Time
Jan. 13th, 2005 04:14 pmSent Tom off east yesterday morn, and since I don't have to work again until Sunday morning, I spent the day in my apartment. The only people I interacted with were those at Papa John's (it was thundering and raining, and with there still plenty of ice around, I decided to treat myself with meaty pizza).
That lasted about a day until I realized that I had nothing terribly exciting to read. Ok, my library may have taken over the living room and kitchen, but I want more!!! Specifically, I had an urge to read Stephanson's latest trilogy, which I was holding off on until it was all in paperback (and thus affordable). At trip to Hastings (my bookstore since I was 9 or so) was in order. Thankfully, no one else sees my credit card bills anymore. Most were off the bargain rack, really. I am currently devouring the latest of David Weber's Honorverse series (a guilty pleasure, but he is my favorite mil sci-fi writer).
So then I decided to wander and get my hair cut. My usual place (or the place I went to last, but it is only two blocks away) was busy, so I decided to read and drink chai (Java Break, still my favorite reading coffee shop in Larryville). Now, I'm hyper. There are reasons I don't use much drugs. Partially I like to stay employed, and I keep working at places that care (even Kwik Shop gave me a swab test before hiring me... Kwik Shop). And partially I've gotten very used to saying no (as the only person at field camp not smoking, except the prof, I think). But mostly because I react strongly to common drugs. I only take Sudafed/Tylenol Cold and Sinus when I really feel crappy, because I REALLY feel weird afterwards. You know what I mean if you've ever seen me on them. And that's usually only the nondrowsy versions. I keep meaning to half the dose, but I do want to kill the pain.
And then there is caffeine. I should be immune, considering how long I have been drinking soda, and how Mountain Dew was breakfast and lunch for much of college. I'm not. Coffee and chai still strongly affect me. I'm buzzing, but not talking to anyone (which is why I'm online ranting again). Probably made worse by a partial clearing of the system. I'd thought I'd had my daily dose yesterday, until I realize the 20 oz of Mountain Dew I'd had with my pizza was the bottle left over from my Halifax trip. For some reason, it is illegal to have caffeine in citrus flavored sodas in Canada. One reason why I might not pick Dal for grad school.
Looking forward to Tuesday, and my new job. Of course, I work Monday at Kwik Shop, so this is probably the shortest unemployed time I've had. Just another hint that this "adulthood" thing is for real. Not sure if I like the idea, but I like the self-confidence and independence it gives me. Now if my cat would just stop eating my paperwork.
