More Orange

After a couple quiet weeks, I decided it was time to bust out my HAZWOPR refresher. Due to COVID, our in person refresher in May was canceled. The provider offered a Zoom version, but the office did not want us to use Zoom on the work laptops, so that was also canceled. Earlier this week, we were finally enrolled in an online version. Painful, but with knitting it was not much more painful than the in person. Though no videos of recent explosions to push the importance of proper storage and labeling. And, it didn't take me the full 8 hours, which is nice because I had fires with my favorite PM to put out. But, I'm back on track for finishing my sweater by the end of the month. First orange of the title is that I'm into the fourth colorway, which is pink-orange-purple (Nest's Firefly).



Next orange is that I did another gauge swatch for the next sweater. Apparently, I'm knitting very loose, because I had to drop two needle sizes to make gauge (5 to 3).



And I finally received my August fiber box from Paradise. Some of the people in the Ravelry discussion group were annoyed that this month is minisamples of their blends from the last year or so. But, I think I already have a plan to use them up. See, earlier this summer I bought Hipstring's mash up fiber, which is scraps of her blends, to spin up into a sweater amount with her mash-up method. And as a neat way to try out a number of her blends, which are pretty neat. I asked for colors in blue to grey range, and she kindly provided. My plan is to use the warm colors (reds, pinks, oranges) from my Paradise package as a proof of concept, and add the cool colors to the pile with the Hipstrings fibers.

I like the idea of club members helping to use oddments creatively--better than their going to waste, anyway. I guess it takes some experience to decide how to use the oddments well, though!

As they still sell large amounts of the oddments, I suspect it is a case of "covid altered our design or production process enough that didn't have anything new this month, so let's advertise our current stock". Which works for me, as I only got one of the constellation blends when it was in the box, not bits of all 12 (and then I ended up trading with the one other local that I know gets the box as I had gotten her astrology sign and she'd gotten mine). If this hadn't given me the opportunity to try a color combination technique at small scale, I'd probably just planned to use them to spin on my spindles, but never gotten around to it. And the card they sent along with the fiber did suggest spinning the bits randomly into one yarn, I just can't handle that level of random color mixing (I accept that I'm most comfortable with analogous colors).
