As per suggestion, I joined ravelry and found a local knitting group. Not sure about trading yarn for products, but a nice group of people who taught me to knit (again). And pointed me to a good website to learn from (knittinghelp.com) with videos. Videos are much easier than diagrams. Using them I taught myself how to purl. I'll practice that for awhile, and then start alternating. See how far I can get teaching myself before the next meeting.

Any one got basic (very simple) fingerless mitt pattern suggestions?

ETA: For no good reason (or short one) I strung up my inkle loom with my favorite tablet weaving pattern. This is much easier using the warping board than the backwards way I've done before.

I took me quit sometime to learn to knt myself. I really don't have any good patterns to go by,

But I generally : sts 40
1. knit
2. purl

Which just helped me get slowly better. Generally when I just purl. The sides of my project wants to roll into a tube. The same goes with knitting lol sorry I don't think this will help you.

I've made some armwarmers before, and am in fact working on a set right now. This pattern looks like what I did: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/90665AD.html (It may have you sign up for the LionBrand website. If so, search for Phoenix Gauntlets.)

Essentially: cast on 25 or so depending on your hand and the yarn, and knit a row, purl a row (Stockinette Stitch) until you have it long enough. Then bind it off and leave a long tail of yarn to sew up the side, remembering to leave a thumb hole.
