In the Black Forest
May. 27th, 2004 05:18 pmSo I have spent the last couple of days in Luxembourg. I ended up staying a night more than originally planned, because I fell in with some good travel companions. It started at breakfast when a nice Aussie named Kirk asked me about my book. Instant pickup line for me. Well, he had planned to walk around with another Aussie couple he had met (Le and Mark) and a nice British girl named Rosie. Much fun, including playing the German version of Trivial Pursuit with a pair of Austrian girls (Slyvia and Martina) as translators. Even the questions were heavily German. Though two South Dakota questions - General Custer and Wounded Knee. Though the Belgian stole my thunder by answering Wounded Knee before I could, even though he was on the other team.
So I knew I was going back to Germany, but nothing really appealed. I had several days left on the flexipass, and no idea where to go. I had been thinking about Heidelberg (famous University) but.. Mark mentioned Freiburg and a great hostel he'd stayed at there. Short internet trip later and I had reserved a room. Except I didn't know if it was reserved until I got here (8 hours on the train later). Fun. The Rhein is an awesome river valley. Met a 70 year old couple that was biking from Amsterdam to Nice, with some detours, and I am so amazed. 48 years together, and still will spend 4 months traveling slowly together. I need to start saving for my retirement.
