I'm getting to the 10 year anniversary of moving out on my own. Like most 20-somethings, I moved a lot in those 10 years (which is why my security clearance package is so much fun to do).

Lewis Hall - Back when it was an all female dorm. I had a great roommate (hippy Christian), but everyone else on our floor sucked (I sorted of got along with the other geology major on the floor, but never saw). The worst was when someone (I'm assuming under the influence of alcohol) decided to mess with roommate's many liberal homemade posters. We thought about complaining to the RA, and said fuck it (RA wasn't to be trusted). Instead we put up more posters.

Sellards Scholarship Hall - After a semester, I got into Sellards. Still all female, but smarter girls. With goals and such. I had great luck with roomates (Ok, two of the last three were useless, but I'm in contact with most of the others). Great fun, communal living. Especially when there is someone responsible in charge of ordering food. And people make and follow sensible rules.

Parents home in SoDak - I went home my first summer. I love my parents, but.. Never again.

Cabin in Colorado/sex slave in friends spare bedroom/tent in Alaska - So I really didn't have an address my second summer. The sex slave part is a joke. Since on of the friends' roommates had left to join the airforce, they were only paying 3/4 of the rent. So the landlord was specific about no overnight guests. But I needed a place to sleep. So I was to explain that I was not a guest, I was a sex slave. Landlord was over a lot those two weeks, but never asked for an explanation. I figure he thought I was a girlfriend (at the time, my boyfriend was sleeping on a porch a couple of blocks down).

Crappy college apartment in Houston - For an internship. I was not the fondest of my roommate, especially after she emptied a can and a half of Raid to get rid of some ants. Also, the AC went out. Thankfully the other interns took me in when my place was unlivable.

University Terrace - my first time living with a boy. Older complex, on the down cycle of maintainance (place is much nicer now). But they allowed cats and had cheap rent. Boy continued to live there for four years after I moved out, moved out to move in with me again.

OCS barracks - Pensacola, Florida, is a.. odd town. Very surreal period in my life. I lived many of those bootcamp/OCS movie moments, often with movie quotes. I learned a lot about myself, such as I can take a lot of short jokes. An amazing number of short jokes. And jokes about my armpit hair.

Duplex in RI - More Navy schooling. Lived with four girls. Very stressful. I learned that I'm done with communal living.

Ship - My home away from home for a year and a half. I met her in Bahrain, and remember my first meal there. Being two flights of stairs away from the office is convenient (especially when you get to wear coveralls), makes it hard to have a separate life. But shipping cost the same as to the US.

My house in Nobi - I miss that house. Big, and only me in it. I didn't have enough to fill it. I had two rooms I rarely went it (I didn't unpack the library until 2 months before moved. Instead I randomly raided the bookboxes, or ordered new stuff, and finished books gathered in large piles in corners). It had a cute little kitchen. I had to figure out bug spray in a foreign language in order to get rid of tatami fleas (thankfully I'd gotten a description of what I needed to buy). The appliances were so small and cute (highly recommended if you're a small girl living alone).

Lots of hostels in Europe - Another three months of no real address. So glad I did that.

Attic apartment - After I moved back to Lawrence. It was so small and cute, I had to get rid of furniture. Some of which is still sitting in a barn in SoDak. The TV went to my sister since it didn't fit up my stairs. But the place was so cheap ($260/month). Which is good since I spent a lot of time there, not searching for work.

House on Wisconsin - Back with boys, mine and his roommate. I started wearing an el cheapo cotton kimono around the house. Then it got cold so I sewed a fleece kimono. Huge house, but ugly (very nasty wallpaper, ceiling collapse in library fixed halfheartedly). But it was large, with a large yard. And a bitch to AC/heat. And the landlord decided he wanted to start builing in the large yard. And got pissy when we called him on it.

Cute little house - Smaller, but only the two of us (and four cats). No attic, no basement. But very cute. Landlord was the previous tenant, and she did a great painting job on the inside. She wasn't the best with keeping up the yard, so we actually get compliments from the neighbors. And she doesn't mind that we plowed up the back yard for a garden. And since we aren't far off the the floodplain (area flooded in the 50's before levees were built), so the soil is very productive. And the neighborhood fits us.

And I'm not moving in August. (But I have a truck, a trailer and a strong boyfriend for those of you locally that are).

I might need to take you up on that truck, trailer and boyfriend offer. ;)

Glad to help. The trailer makes the whole process so much faster. I request that any moving be done in the early morning or late evening. August in Lawrence is insane.

Yup, me too! I still owe you guys dinner for moving stuff last time, too - we'll make it someplace kinda nice since you're both so awesome. :)

I'll be moving the last week of July, by the way. I'll get in touch with you at club when it gets closer to time!

You're first in the queue. Early morning or late evening works best.
