Supposedly, in carnivores, who gets to eat first is an indication of standing. So why do all the cats let Grep eat first? You know, the tiny one they all pick on.

Oh, and I got my first sunburn of the year. Not by weeding (I did that Friday, and accidentally dug up the tomatoes [livejournal.com profile] lawnchair forgot to tell me about), but doing field work. Finally collected data for my GPR class. Site turns out to be perfect for what we need. Accessible, with a 5m by 15 m patch of bare limestone to survey on. The soil nearby is sand. There is definitely structure in the limestone which should be brought out by differing polarizations.

Sometimes carnivores are able to discern that a smaller, weaker animals needs to eat first and to make a decision to let it. I've seen rats occasionally do it, and rats are notorious about hoarding their food. (More often a sick animal will starve because the others finish the food first--but I've also seen rats and mice actually *bring* food and treats to a sick animal.) I've even seen my little orange comet goldfish nudge his sick, weak friend out from his hiding place when we feed them.
