So this morning I was curled up in bed, reading, when [livejournal.com profile] lawnchair comes in saying "We have a problem."

Scary words, I know. And then he shows me ball of fluff with beady eyes (picture will be posted as soon as I find my laptop - EDIT here are some photos.). Then he stops speaking rationally - something about on the back porch. So I start wondering about kitten milk and if the vet is open. Apparently my first reaction is to assume that the kitten was abandoned on our back porch. We went down stairs to the back porch and found a Sid and Maggie Mae. lawnchair fed them while I put the kitten in the tub with blankets. He went to work while I went into the kitchen to watch. Maggie eventually came onto the porch and started to nurse. Mystery solved. Apparently she didn't have a miscarriage, just a small litter. Kitten appears to be 3.5 weeks old, female and white with orange spots.

Now the problem is how to handle this without Maggie freaking out. She's left the kitten on the back porch, which is nice for socialization and taming purposes. Except Maggie isn't particularly tame, and has only allowed me to pet her once (unlike her brother who has decided that pettings lawnchair is great fun, though he won't let me pet him). She runs whenever people are around. But we use the back door to get in and out of the house, as there is no key to the front door (it just locks you out when you shut it). I wonder if I can get her to follow if I move the tub and kitten to the shed?

Also, it is naming time. Suggestions?

Thanks, but I'll pass.

'cause it doesn't lend itself to many nicknames? And is name better for a little black cat.

I'm never good at naming cats. They have to wake me up barfing next to my bed before I can truly name them. Which ever name naturally comes out is what I name them. =)

I fumble my way through it. I'm proud of Ljubljana and Niobrara, because they're neat names that lead to good nicknames (Lou and Bear). Grep and Grok were not good choices, to similiar to each other. I'm forever calling out the wrong name. That's why I'm trying to call Grep by her nickname of Sweetpea more often.

For the kitten we're still not sure. Usually we refer to her as the microcat, but we're nerds. I like my mom's suggestion of Clementine, since she's orange and it's music related (like Maggie Mae and Sid Vicious). I also like Cockleburr (kitten claws cling to clothes) and Ceberal (she shakes a lot).
