affrecaAfter a 12 hour bus ride, I got to Zagreb. The hostel recommended to me sucks, and I do not feel like I need to spend much time here, so I think I will go onto Hungary tomorrow morning. Still trying to decide if it will be to Lake Balkatan or Budapest. Depends on how I feel in the morning. That is the wonderful part of traveling by myself and with no deadlines, yet. I figure I need to be to Helsinki in a month.
For the question about how I find places to stay, it is a combination of the Lonely Planet Europe on a Shoestring Guide and recommendations from other travelers. Occasionally I search online, but.. not always the best. A good starting point, though, for searching. I have mostly been staying at hostels, which rent bed as opposed to rooms. They often have double/triple/quad rooms for groups, but the dorm beds are the cheapest for the single traveler. Except Dubrovnik, where the "hotel" I was staying at was cheaper then the hostel. And much cooler, since I had a view, a kitchen and a bathroom. And for one night the room to myself, which was very weird. There are Hostel International hostels, which are very bland, but usually clean (except the one here, which is kinda rundown) and independent ones, which have much more character and usually have a kitchen and a bar. They range in price from $20 in Western Europe to $12 in Eastern Europe. There are also some that are college dorm rooms rented out for the summer. An idea that would be nice to catch on in the states for extra money to the university.
Oh, and some of you know of my internet comic addiction. Even paying for internet, I check some frequently. My current favorite is a bit dark and geeky, but is great. In fact, so good the fans raised enough money in a month to convince the author to stop working. $22000 for a comic that is free to most people. Check it out, www.somethingpositive.net if you have a broad sense of humor (some will be offended, that is why I doubt he will ever make the newspapers).
