NHK programming today includes proper zabutan (sitting pillow) etiquette lessons with clueless American. It was educational for me, even after two years in Japan (though with little interaction with many Japanese) and an anime addiction.
Sounds interesting. Even if you had had more interaction with the Japanese, there's no guaranteeing they would have ever told you how to properly do anything...They're just too darn polite (and probably don't know how to speak English).
