I've got a shopping question about sergers. I've been putting off getting one until I had a larger space, which I should have by next month. What are some good brands (especially if there are dealers/repairpeople in Lawrence). What is the minimum I should look for (i.e. I know my mini serger from a garage sale is useless)? Anyone got one for sale?

The serger guide I love:

That's useful. What brand/model is your serger, and what's your favorite/least favorite aspect of it?

White speedylock 1634, the Hastings special. It was cheap, so I learned things and got to futz it up for only $200 or so. However, it doesn't keep tension well, especially overlock, and the blades dull after 10 or so hours of sewing (which we both know is a blink of an eye in my world). Threading is not so bad, but I studied it a lot. Wish I had gotten a free arm, it's difficult to sew small areas like sleeve cuffs accurately. Switches nicely to rolled hem, but again tension problems make that harder.

I had a Singer overlock machine for years that did very well by me. (Have heard bad things about Singers from some people but mine was not plagued by the problems they describe). Then I saved up and saved and saved and saved and went to Missouri Sewing Machine in KC and got a Babylock Imagine. I *LOOOOVVVEEE* it.

It has that air-guided-through-tubes automatic threading and does lots of stuff that I don't even know how to do yet. And it's pretty easy to clean and maintain.

I have a Singer that works fine that I'm looking to sell (since we have 3 sergers at the moment). The only drawback is that it takes a brand specific needle rather than regular sewing needles, but there are at least 2 places in town that sell them. Let me know if you are interested.

I might be interested. What model is it, and how much do you want?

You might check with Bob's Bernina over in the Holiday Plaza at 25th & Iowa...

Singer Ultralock, probably asking $40 for it. My mother used it for light duty, it got passed to us and only got occasional use. I'll try to bring it to meetup tonight.
