What Does this Say About My Reading Habits
Apr. 7th, 2012 01:26 pmA few weeks after buying my nook, and I adore it. I did not think that it would take over my reading habits the way it has, but I've only read half* a book in paper format since buying it. Apparently Grandma Ranney is again** successful in getting me exactly the present I love, even when I didn't realize how much.
A blog prompted me to consider the gender breakdown of the authors I read. I occasionally consider starting up a book log, but never remember. But since all the books I've read recently are on my Nook, I could use it to prompt my memory.
So I looked through the library of books loaded on my Nook, which also includes all the other eBooks I've picked up the last several years***. And apparently of the roughly 30**** eBooks on my Nook, only three are cowritten by men. The rest were written by 17 different women authors.
Sadly, I'm now conscious of this, and will think about it everytime I buy an eBook, so it is no longer an biased experiment.
*My book buying has been split between rebuying old favorites and new books that the library doesn't have. One evening I was in the mood to read an old favorite on paper, but I finished it on the Nook.
**I'm still debating if this one counts, because techinically she gave me the standard gift of a B&N gift card, something that I've gotten most Christmases since high school. This year I decided to use it for the thing I've been avoiding since they've become popular - an eBook reader. Other awesome gifts that I would have never bought myself have been my toiletry kit (which has gone with my on just about every trip since college) and my awesome purse (well the first one which lasted me many years. I finally replaced it this winter with the exact same model).
***because I have been reading on my iPod during lunch. One book lasts over a month that way.
****Many of my preNook purchases omnibuses from Baen*****, so one file includes multiple books. And I loaded "free" copy the Vorkosagan series which came with Cryoburn.
*****Note to self - pay attention to the publisher when shopping for eBooks. Baen handles the eBooks for Nightshade Press, so I can find Nightshade's books cheaper and nonDRM on their website. Wish I'd realized that three books back.
