So last weekend was my first fall break at KU. I putzed around Wednesday, then went to see Googol Bordello, a Ukranian Gypsy punk band at the Bottleneck. Ben had mentioned that they were a great show, and Tonya had free tickets. Stayed up late (midnight) and even saw one of my students.

We got up early on Thursday (Tom still had to pack) and drove out to Sedalia, MO. There we caught a train to Hermann, a quiet little German wine town. We went through a small museum (because I love them) and a independent used book store. Mostly sat in the town park, reading.

Friday morning was very foggy. So we walked to the local diner for breakfast and wait for it to burn off. Then turned on the GPS and headed out (it ended up still being foggy over the Missouri River, which was kind of scary). 45 flat miles later and we reached Jefferson City. Saw some great views, with the river on our left and dolostone cliffs on our right. I was tired. And the hotel was 5 miles away, up several hills. Thankfully it had a hot tub. Never wanted one so bad. I'll admit, I walked the bike up most of those hills. At least Perkins was right next door, because I was starving.

We were up relatively early Saturday. I'm not sure if it was because my legs were fresh, the advil had kicked in, or the hills were mostly down, but getting out of town was easier. We also stopped at a bike shop, and I bought butt padded shorts. Also, Tom needed a new bag for his camel-back, as his 6 year old one had started leaking in Hermann. We stopped for brunch at an overpriced cafe in Hartsburg, and I made a bike shop guy's day by paying for my new water bottle with a Canadian quarter (and a five dollar bill). Couldn't figure out the accent, but he was pointing at it to his wife/coworker?, saying "It's Liz". Hmmm.. royalty affects people weirdly. Like how happy Australia is that the Danish crown princess was born in Tasmania. More nice views. Also saw a riverside Thai restuarant. Rent canoes, camp and eat Thai curry. Finally got into the campground in Franklin. The restuarant there was a bit nicer than I expected, and Tom hadn't gotten the pizza delivery place's phone number. So we walked to New Franklin, and had diner at a "The Big Dipper." I love small town diners.

That camp ground had several other bicyclists, all going the other way. And two troops of boyscouts. So, after chatting with the Iowan couple, we headed out. By Booneville, my knees and neck were killing me. A couple of adjustments helped, but I am sore. I made Tom talk to me, and that helped. Also, ran into a group organized by the Sierra Club that was biking the whole length. Including a woman on a Marin (same brand as mine, much more of a touring bike than mine). I couldn't stop in front of them, so I kept on. Got back to Sedalia, and drove home to visit with Hayden, who is up for her Fall Break. I'm afraid we weren't great company, but we did go out to Ruchi's, for Indain buffet. Nummy naan.

Someday I will post pictures. Right now I'm avoiding doing anything useful, because I'm sleepy. And lazy. I would take a nap, but sitting around, on the foolish idea that students would show up to office hours.
