Cheap Scots
Sep. 25th, 2004 09:45 pmI really to mean to save money. But my boyfriend encourages spending. He may say that he's typical Scottish skinflint, and he does go for good deals, but he likes to spend money. And then I spend money. Like yesterday, he was over and was looking at laptops. He has a small Toshiba and a IBM (one for his place and one for mine), and decided to sell the Dell and buy another Toshiba (from a company that is sure to put him on the watch lists, if he isn't already). And then suggests that I buy some more compact flash memory for my camera. I have two cards, but they are small. They store much more, and prices have come down. I should have bought some instead of a nice film camera, and saved myself some money. Shrug.
Then today we got up early and walked to the farmer's market. Nothing I needed there (but could have bought meat from at least three exotic animals). Got a new library card. I still have my old Lawrence Library card, but it is no longer good. Then bought sleeping bag at Everything But Ice (awesome Lawrence odd lot store). Tom says he might trade me memory for it, since it zips to the last one he bought. Which is just silly.
In other ways he is cheap. He ripped a pair of his BDUs (I have encouraged military surplus for the pacifist) and wanted to fix them. He knows how to sew (runs in the family on the male side) but never learned to use a new fangled machine (just older, electricity added treadles). I finally taught him a skill. He did a pretty good job. And complimented the last dress I sewed when I dragged it out for showing.
Also won an auction for 15 belly button rings. I keep losing the top ball to all of mine, and ebay is the cheapest way I have found to get them. But shipping is so low, it is cheaper to get multiple ones. So, I have few to give away.
Finally made the mushroom barley soup, and it is very good.
Mushroom Barley Soup, Kelly Style
8 oz Mushrooms
1/2 Onion
3 Leeks
1 Carrot
2 Cloves Garlic
Cut and fry above vegetables in 1 tablespoon butter (or 48% percent Vegetable Oil Spread) and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil for 5-10 minutes.
2/3 Cup Barley Pearls
Add barley and cook for another 5 minutes. Dump in crockpot.
2 Vegetable Bullion Cubes
4 Cups Water
Make 4 cups vegetable broth somehow. I suggest the cubes. Might as well bring it to a boil. Then dump it in the crockpot. Let simmer for 40 minutes. Tastes great with biscuits in a can. If that isn't cannibalism for you.
